I think it comes down to 'voice' which is the individual way each author chooses to tell their story and seems to be vital when submitting to publishers of romance.

That's easy - it's because I love reading romances and I absolutely love writing them and knowing there is going to be a Happy Ever After no matter what.

I plan out my chapters and make sure I've got at least one major scene or character development in each. Then I start to write and as I do so, my plan evolves and changes. I edit in the mornings before I start to write for the day and I aim for 3000 words. I only get time to write two days a week so it's not as fast as it may seem.

Luckily with Mills and Boon Cherish, I got two titles in one book. I've just finished reading 'English Girl in New York' by Scarlet Wilson and really enjoyed it. The hero, Dan, is gorgeous with dark hair and lovely brown eyes, mmm.... He and the heroine, Carrie, are stuck in a New York apartment with an abandoned baby to look after in the middle of a snow storm. It was a great read beside the fire while the weather was dreich and horrid outside. Lovely. Now I'm going to start 'That Summer at the Shore' by Callie Endicott which is the second story in the book. Hopefully that'll keep me going over the weekend.Carol MacLeanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17893946748914418193noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4371941654724752481.post-39127160936642719322013-12-20T02:56:00.002-08:002013-12-20T02:57:32.901-08:00Frozen HeartMy latest Linford Romance is now out! 'The Jubilee Letter' was originally published by DC Thomson Pocket Novels to celebrate the Queen's Diamond Jubilee - Maggie Seed, the Editor, was looking for a story set at the time of the new young Queen's Coronation but which also included the contemporary theme of the Diamond Jubilee.
The Jubilee Letter is all about a young woman called Avril Garnett, here's the back page blurb:
The letter had been lost in the post for fifty years. But for Avril it solved a mystery, which had unsettled her since the Queen's coronation - when she was young and in love...There had been two suitors to choose from: was Avril tempted by charming Jack or quiet Gordon? Both Jack and Gordon had secrets and it was only when Avril discovered what they were hiding that she had been able to choose a love to last a lifetime.

I had a lot of fun researching Glasgow of the 1950s - the music and fashions and the way the city looked. It was fascinating and the book itself was a delight to write, in fact it's my favourite of the seven pocket novels I've written.

Now it's been published as a Linford Romance and if you'd like to read it, you can request it in your local library. I hope you enjoy reading it.
Finally Summer is here - and it's wonderful to see the sun and feel its heat. As predicted, after a very late Spring here in the north, Summer came in like a lion.

We've had a real surge in Orange-tip butterflies courting and laying eggs on very late flowering Cuckoo Flower this year. Now Green-veined White butterflies are dominant, fluttering agitatedly everywhere. They can be distinguished from the very similar looking Small White butterfly (all of them, including the Large White, collectively known as Cabbage Whites) by the 'jizz' of its flight. The Small White is a lazier flier, not bothered too much while the Green-veined has places to go and people to meet...

Now you can look out for Small Heath, Meadow Brown and Ringlet amongst the flowering grasses. All of them rather dull in colour at first glance but have a closer look and marvel at their soft markings and pretty shades of grey, orange and brown.
It doesn't get light until about 8.20am which doesn't inspire me to get up in the mornings. However, the sight of a flock of 30 Waxwings did light up the day for me recently.
These beautiful birds are exotically coloured like little parrots. In severe winters they fly over from the Russian tundra and Scandinavia to the UK looking for berries to eat.
We only get to see them every second or third winter so it's a real treat to find them. In flight they look like a flock of starlings but once they settle on a tree their head crests give them away.
Look for them now because by the end of February they've gone, not to be found until December if we're lucky or two or three years hence if we're not.
The Robin symbolises Christmas and appears on Christmas cards in various jolly poses. These usually include a line of robins all sitting happily together on a wire or fence.

In real life this would never happen. Robins are fiercely territorial and will fight with incomers. Males and females look the same but it's the males who fight most. Although you think of your 'own garden robin' in actual fact our robins are partial migrants. So when you are chatting to your robin, it may or may not be the same one you saw last week!Carol MacLeanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17893946748914418193noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4371941654724752481.post-85877517276765970792012-07-04T11:35:00.000-07:002012-07-04T11:35:45.575-07:00New Book Release!!I'm very excited. As authors we can get so wrapped up in our WIP that it's all we think about. But it can be refreshing not only for our health but also for our creativity and writing inspiration, to take time out to do something utterly different.

Today I attended a cupcake workshop where I learned to decorate cupcakes in a variety of ways. I had a lot of fun and feel better for it. It was good to do an activity which was not writing related and as a result of a day off, I am enthusiastic and ready to write tomorrow.

Also, I now have new experiences that perhaps I could use in my writing - one of my characters could be in the catering industry like the lady who took the class - twenty years in patisseries! Sounds blissful. I people-watched too - there were twelve of us at the class with an age range of 20 to 70 with different jobs and different aspirations from the class. Lots of potential for character development there.

If you want to try decorating cupcakes, it's a simple recipe - one block of butter to one box of icing sugar mixed with 2 egg yolks. Half of this can form your base layer, then colour up the other half and use in a piping bag with shape nozzles for fantastic effects!

Hi - I've been tagged by Cara Cooper to take part in the 'Lucky 7 Meme' which is going around. What I have to do is go to my current WIP (work in progress) page 77, go to line 7 and paste the 7 sentences there. So here goes:

She did, didn’t she? He was dashing and attractive and
charming. He was attentive too. Okay, he’d disappointed her with his lukewarm
view on the slums but perhaps she was expecting too much from him. Not everyone
would be interested in it. Besides, Jack hadn’t seen what she had. She was
being too hard on him.

It's a bit strange seeing it out of context. I had to use 'Avril's Letter' for this (soon to be published) because my current WIP is only 4 pages long! Yes, I've started pocket novel number 5 and am still freshly on Chapter One.

Taking a little chunk like this at least lets you see if you've got a variety of sentence lengths and structure.

Now I'm supposed to tag 7 others but first I need to start connecting to other people's blogs. I'm finding it a steep learning curve blogging and linking and commenting...back soon.
Carol MacLeanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17893946748914418193noreply@blogger.com
